The Purpose of Notation in Chess


Why do chess players bother to write down their moves during games?

First to have a record of the game for review/study.

Most importantly, should a dispute arise during the game, i.e a piece fell off the board and needs to be restored to its rightful place, but neither player can remember where it stood, a quick glance at your notation sheet will quickly resolve this issue.

This chess notation can also serve to assist the arbiter in making better informed decisions in the event of a dispute.

The Fide laws of chess explains method of notation, should you not know how to record a game. Fide arbiter manual 2022 Article 8 pp29 -30…see extract.


It is important to understand the FIDE laws as it will alleviate a lot of unsurety when playing chess and thus taking away undue stress.

I will now add a scoresheet you can use to practice on or simply make copies as needed when plauying in tournaments.
