Vasily Vasilyevich (Vasilievich) Smyslov 7th classical world champ 1957 – 1958

Blog Chess Discussion Coaching

As an aspiring young chess player, I always like the playing style of Vasily Smyslov. I got hold of some of his games in an Encyclopedia at my local library and was intrigued with his style of play especially to achieve certain winning positions in the endgame. In other words “Smyslov played with an end in mind”.

A tribute fromĀ Anatoly Karpov:

“What I remember most about [Smyslov] was his competitive spirit, but also his delicate sense of humour. It was always very tough playing against him, despite him being more than twice my age”.

Till next time, burn the chess candle on both ends.
